Snake 🐍 bite boy

Three-year-old Teddy Lasry was napping yesterday in his cowboy outfit yesterday at his family's Fifth Ave. apartment when he shot up in bed screaming. A 3-foot-long black-and-white snake was coiled around his left arm and had just bitten his pinky.

"The baby-sitter freaked out," said Teddy's father, David Lasry, who, along with his wife, Evelyn, was at work when the reptile showed up about 4 p.m.

The horrified nanny called 911 and the building's doorman. The doorman and two cable TV workers helped pry the snake off the boy's arm and stow it in a garbage bag, Lasry said.

Police rushed Teddy to Mount Sinai Medical Center, where his parents said he spent two hours attached to a heart monitor as a precaution in case the snake was poisonous.

It wasn't. Experts at the snakebite treatment center at Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx, where cops took the critter, determined it was a non-venomous California king snake.

But how did it end up in Teddy's bed?

A little sleuthing determined that the serpent had escaped two weeks ago from its cage in the apartment of a doctor whose family lives four floors below the Lasrys. The apologetic owner said his son's pet snake likely traveled up the radiator pipes and into his neighbor's apartment.

"It's a very docile, very harmless snake," he said. "It's handled by our family all the time."

Lasry, 42, a fine arts publisher, said he believed the pet was simply hungry after two weeks of cruising. Teddy's mother, Evelyn Lasry, 37, said her son seems to have gotten over his fright by thinking of himself as a hero cowboy as he rode in the back of the police cruiser to the hospital.

"I told Teddy he's a pretty snake, a nice pet snake who got out of his cage," Evelyn Lasry said. "But he asked, 'Why did he bite my finger, Mamma?' And I said, 'Because he saw that you are a big boy, Teddy, in your cowboy outfit and he got scared.'"

Moving day

The end of summer was coming. School would be starting soon. I was looking forward to returning to school to see my friends. I had been visiting my aunt for most of the summer so it was nice to be home. I was only home a couple of hours when my parents gave me the bad news. We were going to move to another city. 

"When are we moving?" I asked. 

"Next week," my parents told me. 

"Next week? When did all of this happen?" I asked in shock over the news. 

"Two months ago, your father was transferred to another office. He received a promotion, and he will be making more money than before. It'll be really good for him and for us," my mother tried to make me feel better. 

"I hate moving, and I hate you!" I yelled as I ran to my room.

 I lay on my bed looking at the ceiling. How could we be moving? I had lived in this house all my life. This was MY room. I helped my dad paint the room last year. It was exactly the way I wanted it. It was perfect. 

I rolled over and began to cry. Why did this have to be happening now? I was getting ready to see all my friends. I did not want to move. I wanted to stay in my own house. After a while, I fell asleep. 

The next morning, I left the house to visit my friend Mark. He lived two houses away from me. We had been best friends for as long as I could remember. 

When I got to his house, I just walked in the front door. I was like a member of the family. I never knocked or rang the bell. 2 "Where's Mark?" I asked his mother. 

"He's up in his room. Why do you look so sad?" she asked me. 

"My parents told me yesterday that we are moving next week. I'm not too happy about it," I said while holding my head down. 

"I know, your parents told me a week ago that they had sold the house and that you'd be moving to another city. We'll miss you a lot around here," Mrs. Kelley said as she walked over and gave me a hug. 

I ran upstairs to Mark's room. He was cleaning his room and making his bed. He always took a long time to clean his room. He did not like to do it, but his mom made him. 

"Hey, Mark, what's up?" I asked him. 

"Oh, hi Billy, I heard that you're moving. That really stinks. What are we gonna do?" he asked. 

"I don't know. I haven't thought about it too much. I just found out last night after dinner. I wish that my aunt had told me about this," I answered. 

"When are you moving?" Mark asked 

"My parents said next week. This is the worst thing that's ever happened to me," I said as I sat down on Mark's unmade bed. 

"Hey, I was making that bed. Get up and help me," Mark yelled at me. 

We finished making his bed, and then we went outside to climb our favorite tree.

 "I don't want to move," I said as I sat on my favorite branch. "I've lived here my whole life. All my friends are here. I know all the shortcuts, and I'm comfortable here. Why do we have to move?" 

"Maybe you don't have to move," Mark spoke up. "I bet we can come up with a plan so you don't have to move." 

"Do you have any ideas?" I asked him. 

"Not really, but if we think real hard I'm sure we can come up with a plan," Mark suggested. 

We sat in the tree most of the day talking and planning. Some of the ideas were good, some of them were bad, but most of them were really funny. 

We thought about running away. We talked about hiding in his room. We even talked about building a tree fort in our favorite tree so I could live there. None of the ideas worked out. 

My mother called me to come home for lunch. I invited Mark to join me. 

When we walked in the door, my mother was in the kitchen fixing my lunch. 

"Mom, do we really have to move?" I asked 

"I'm afraid so Billy. If we don't move your father will lose his job, and then we won't have any money to pay for the things we need. We sold the house already, and the new owners will be here next week to move in. I know this is hard for you, but you'll make new friends at our new house," my mom tried to make me feel better. 

Every day, Mark and I tried to find a way to stop the move, but then it was moving day, and we had not come up with a plan. 

On the day of our move, the car was packed for our trip. The big moving van was filled with our stuff. The van drove off as we said goodbye to our friends and neighbors. I said goodbye to Mark and his family for the last time. We promised to text each other. 

We took our time driving to our new house. We saw many things and took many pictures. It was a fun trip. 

When we got to the new city, we went to our house. I could not believe it. The house was huge. It sat on a hill overlooking the valley where the city was. The view was amazing. 

The moving van had arrived before us, and all our things were already inside. 

We walked in the front door. I had never seen a house like this before. It was beautiful. There was a room with a giant TV screen. In another room, we had a pool table and video games. This was going to be an amazing place to live. 

"Can I invite Mark to come to our house?" I asked. 

I was excited to show him my new house. 

"Maybe next summer he can come for a visit," my mom answered. 

"Go up and see your new room. It's the second door on the left," Dad told me. 

I ran up the stairs, pushed open the door, and I saw the most amazing room I had ever seen. My parents had my room painted the same color as the old room. All my pictures and awards were already on the walls, and best of all, I had a big window that looked out over the city. I could see all the tall buildings, and at night, the lights would be amazing to see.

 I lay back on my bed with my hands behind my head and looked around my new room. Maybe moving to a new city was not that bad after all.

The Magic fish

Every day, Robert's grandfather went fishing. One day, Robert asked to go too. 

'Well, I want to catch the magic fish. The first person to eat it will become the cleverest person in the world. Can you help me?' 

'Yes!' said Robert, and they went fishing. 

First, they caught a yellow fish with purple spots. 'Wow! Is that the magic fish?' asked Robert. 

'No,' said his grandfather. 

Then they caught a blue fish with red stripes. 'Is that the magic fish?' asked Robert. 

'No,' said his grandfather. 

Suddenly, they caught a big, beautiful silver fish with pink and green diamonds. Robert's grandfather jumped for joy. It was the magic fish! They started to cook the fish, and his grandfather went to get some more wood. He asked Robert to watch the fish, but not to eat any of it.

 Robert watched the fish very carefully. He saw a tiny bubble on its tail. He touched it with his finger. Pop! The bubble burst. The fish was very hot and burnt his finger. Ouch! He put his finger in his mouth. 

When his grandfather came back, he saw that something was different. 'Did you touch the fish?' asked his grandfather. 

'Yes, I'm sorry,' said Robert. 

His grandfather sighed a happy sigh and gave Robert a big hug. 'The magic fish chose you. You are the cleverest boy in the world, and I am the proudest grandfather ever!'

संसार क्या है?

एक दिन एक शिष्य ने गुरु से पूछा, 'गुरुदेव, आपकी दृष्टि में यह संसार क्या है?' इस पर गुरु ने एक कथा सुनाई। 'एक नगर में एक शीशमहल था। महल की हरेक दीवार पर सैकड़ों शीशे जडे़ हुए थे। एक दिन एक गुस्सैल कुत्ता महल में घुस गया। महल के भीतर उसे सैकड़ों कुत्ते दिखे, जो नाराज और दु:खी लग रहे थे। उन्हें देखकर वह उन पर भौंकने लगा। उसे सैकड़ों कुत्ते अपने ऊपर भौंकते दिखने लगे। वह डरकर वहां से भाग गया। कुछ दूर जाकर उसने मन ही मन सोचा कि इससे बुरी कोई जगह नहीं हो सकती।

कुछ दिनों बाद एक अन्य कुत्ता शीशमहल पहुंचा। वह खुशमिजाज और जिंदादिल था। महल में घुसते ही उसे वहां सैकड़ों कुत्ते दुम हिलाकर स्वागत करते दिखे। उसका आत्मविश्वास बढ़ा और उसने खुश होकर सामने देखा तो उसे सैकड़ों कुत्ते खुशी जताते हुए नजर आए। उसकी खुशी का ठिकाना न रहा। जब वह महल से बाहर आया तो उसने महल को दुनिया का सर्वश्रेष्ठ स्थान और वहां के अनुभव को अपने जीवन का सबसे बढ़िया अनुभव माना। वहां फिर से आने के संकल्प के साथ वह वहां से रवाना हुआ।'

कथा समाप्त कर गुरु ने शिष्य से कहा, 'संसार भी ऐसा ही शीशमहल है जिसमें व्यक्ति अपने विचारों के अनुरूप ही प्रतिक्रिया पाता है। जो लोग संसार को आनंद का बाजार मानते हैं, वे यहां से हर प्रकार के सुख और आनंद के अनुभव लेकर जाते हैं। जो लोग इसे दुखों का कारागार समझते हैं उनकी झोली में दु:ख और कटुता के सिवाय कुछ नहीं बचता।

मन की शांति

एक गरीब आदमी था। वह हर रोज अपने गुरु के आश्रम जाकर वहां साफ-सफाई करता और फिर अपने काम पर चला जाता था। अक्सर वो अपने गुरु से कहता कि आप मुझे आशीर्वाद दीजिए तो मेरे पास ढेर सारा धन-दौलत आ जाए।

एक दिन गुरु ने पूछ ही लिया कि क्या तुम आश्रम में इसीलिए काम करने आते हो। उसने पूरी ईमानदारी से कहा कि हां, मेरा उद्देश्य तो यही है कि मेरे पास ढ़ेर सारा धन आ जाए, इसीलिए तो आपके दर्शन करने आता हूं। पटरी पर सामान लगाकर बेचता हूं। पता नहीं, मेरे सुख के दिन कब आएंगे। गुरु ने कहा कि तुम चिंता मत करो। जब तुम्हारे सामने अवसर आएगा तब ऊपर वाला तुम्हें आवाज थोड़ी लगाएगा। बस, चुपचाप तुम्हारे सामने अवसर खोलता जाएगा। युवक चला गया। समय ने पलटा खाया, वो अधिक धन कमाने लगा। इतना व्यस्त हो गया कि आश्रम में जाना ही छूट गया। 

कई वर्षों बाद वह एक दिन सुबह ही आश्रम पहुंचा और साफ-सफाई करने लगा। गुरु ने बड़े ही आश्चर्य से पूछा- क्या बात है, इतने बरसों बाद आए हो, सुना है बहुत बड़े सेठ बन गए हो। वो व्यक्ति बोला- बहुत धन कमाया। अच्छे घरों में बच्चों की शादियां की, पैसे की कोई कमी नहीं है पर दिल में चैन नहीं है। ऐसा लगता था रोज सेवा करने आता रहूं पर आ ना सका।

गुरुजी, आपने मुझे सब कुछ दिया पर जिंदगी का चैन नहीं दिया। गुरु ने कहा कि तुमने वह मांगा ही कब था? जो तुमने मांगा वो तो तुम्हें मिल गया ना।  फिर आज यहां क्या करने आए हो ? उसकी आंखों में आंसू भर आए, गुरु के चरणों में गिर पड़ा और बोला- अब कुछ मांगने के लिए सेवा नहीं करूंगा। बस दिल को शान्ति मिल जाए। गुरु ने कहा- पहले तय कर लो कि अब कुछ मांगने के लिए आश्रम की सेवा नहीं करोगे, बस मन की शांति के लिए ही आओगे।

गुरु ने समझाया कि चाहे मांगने से कुछ भी मिल जाए पर दिल का चैन कभी नहीं मिलता इसलिए सेवा के बदले कुछ मांगना नहीं है। वो व्यक्ति बड़ा ही उदास होकर गुरु को देखता रहा और बोला- मुझे कुछ नहीं चाहिए। आप बस, मुझे सेवा करने दीजिए। सच में, मन की शांति सबसे अनमोल है।

संतोषी व्यक्ति

एक बहुत विद्वान संत थे। वे कहीं भी ज्यादा दिन नहीं रहते थे, पैदल ही एक शहर से दूसरे शहर जाकर लोगों को प्रवचन दिया करते थे। लोग भी उन्हें बहुत मानते थे और सम्मान करते थे। 

एक बार संत पैदल ही दूसरे शहर जा रहे थे। रास्ते में उन्हें एक सोने का सिक्का मिला। महात्मा ने उसे उठा लिया और अपने पास रख लिया। उन्होंने सोचा कि ये सिक्का मैं सबसे गरीब इंसान को ही दूंगा।

संत कई दिनों तक ऐसे किसी इंसान की तलाश करते रहे, जो बहुत गरीब हो। लेकिन उन्हें ऐसा कोई व्यक्ति नजर नहीं आया। इस तरह कुछ समय और बीत गया। संत भी वो बात भूल गए।

एक दिन संत ने देखा कि एक राजा अपनी सेना सहित दूसरे राज्य पर चढ़ाई करने जा रहा है। तभी साधु को सोने के सिक्के की याद आई। उन्होंने वो सिक्का निकाला और राजा के ऊपर फेंक दिया।

संत को ऐसी हरकत करते देख राजा नाराज भी हुआ और आश्चर्यचकित भी। राजा ने संत से इसका कारण पूछा तो उन्होंने कहा कि- राजा, कुछ समय पहले ये सोने का सिक्का मुझे रास्ते से मिला था। मैं इसे सबसे गरीब इंसान को देना चाहता था। लेकिन मुझे अभी तक कोई गरीब मनुष्य नहीं दिखाई दिया। आज जब मैंने तुम्हें देखा तो लगा कि तुम ही सबसे गरीब मनुष्य हो।

राजा ने संत से पूछा कि- आपको ऐसा क्यों लगा, क्योंकि मैं तो राजा हूं। मेरे पास तो अकूत धन-संपत्ति है। संत ने कहा- इतना धन होने के बाद भी तुम दूसरे राज्य पर अधिकार करना चाह रहे हो। वो भी सिर्फ उस राज्य का धन पाने के लिए तो तुमसे बड़ा गरीब और कौन हो सकता है। राजा को अपनी गलती का अहसास हुआ और वो अपनी सेना लेकर अपने देश लौट गया।

*शिक्षा:-*

कभी किसी दूसरे के धन पर नजर नहीं रखनी चाहिए। हमेशा अपनी मेहनत से कमाए गए धन में ही संतोष करना चाहिए। इस दुनिया में संतोषी व्यक्ति ही सबसे सुखी है। संतोषी व्यक्ति को अपने पास जो साधन होते हैं, वे ही पर्याप्त लगते हैं।
